Somali pirates - new global crisis?

In the News, there are more and more informations about kidnappings west vessels by Somali Pirates. They take more and more hostages, they get big ransoms. After last hijack of US-flagged container ship pirates took captain of the ship as a hostage. It is the second container ship reported hijacked off Somalia in less than a week. USA government after failure negotiations, ordered to rescue him by force. For this task they send Navy Seals team. The Navy Seals snipers took out three pirates in few seconds. Mission was successful, but pirates said that from now they will kill every American hostages without any negotiations. It looks like the problem is growing up and It's only beginning of new world crisis with no solution.

Richard Phillips, right, the captain of the U.S.-flagged cargo ship Maersk Alabama, after his rescue.

It seems that this situation is never ending story, until UE and other countries start doing something instead of just watching. Pirates get few millions USD for every kidnapped ship, so for them those are easy money in their poor country.

Do you think we should be worry about this new threat during global financial crisis? Do you think UE should take some serious actions preventing next hijacks? Maybe we just need to use military force and eliminate pirates, like talibs in Iraq or Afghanistan?

Oh, and for those who like advanced military technologies, US DARPA agency is researching new Guided-Bullet technology for sniper rifles to deal with such difficult situations.

Well...let's just send soldiers there and sink every pirates' boats on that sea.
    Sound good for me.

  2. And good for me, but honestly...it's funny to hear about "water" pirates these days :-) . Let's take an "airwolf" or another chopper and shoot them down and we will see if they're land rats or what. Of course this is serious....

  3. funnily enough, but they do not have any weapons because it is forbidden by law on international waters

  4. Notin's fobidden fo pirates, arrr! ;-)

But seriously, I don't believe that killig them off would actually solve the problem. There are plenty of substitute pirates waiting to be armed and send into the waters to rob tankers. I'm sure they are not stealing those ships for themselves. They are ordered to do that.

Companies owning ships just have to pay ransoms. Just like "protection" in pubs, clubs etc. Somehow it still pays off those companies.

  5. it's really weird,
XXI-th century and they cannot deal with bunch of people with guns in a motorboat,
how did they manage to get on (or even climb) this supertanker? it's unbelievable...
and haven't they extracted enough money in exchange for the release of all those boats?
i was told that only last year, they took in somewhere between $50 million and $150 million in ransom money O_O

  6. In my opinion at first they should analyse why this is happening (pirates stealing ships) to not let this situations repeat in the future. After analysis and all documentation process and setting facts EU, NATO and other should use force to destroy them. I think this is best idea to deal with this anarchy. I believe that some of them are poor guys but for example in Mexico City there are also a lot of poor people but they can care about themselves. I mentioned about Mexico City because there is a lot of anarchy on the streets but in spite of this there is a some kind of harmony too and people can live without killing each other(I saw some Cejrowski's documentaries about this city ;) )... In my opinion also in Somalia somebody let anarchy to rise this level that now they can't deal with.

    – yes, I read about it before and I don’t believe them. They are not an organization like Al-Kaida where they have some kind of “holy war”, kill for religious reasons and when a member dies they treat him like a martyr. They are small groups of poor fishermen who want to “earn” money. Now all the world is watching what they are doing. They do not have courage to kill. It’s my opinion.
I agree with Mrs. Świerk that the international admiralty see needs changes.

  9. I think that weapon will not change anyth. Because problem is a gap in standard of leaving between us and them.. They have TV and they see nice houses, big cities, nice cars, etc. The are aggressive because they have HIV instead of food, they have sanctions instead of nice cars :] Have you seen Black Hawk Down, on which side you have been, I have been angry that US have to put their foot everyware:/

  10. Recently there was South Park episode about pirates and I must say, that there was very important thing said - they to that to feed their families. Is it true? I don't know. But it isn't good solution to attack ships. On other side why ships aren't protected by international forces like NATO or other?

  11. I agree that this whats happening is unbelivable in our times. Even if these pirates do this because they are poor they shouldnt use terrorism to care about themselfes. If there isnt any other way they should be stopped by force.
Not so long ago they have even attacked some military ship because they thought it was a tanker.. well they surely were suprized :)
