Customs, Easter and rabbits....

Customs:

Czech Republic:

Our neighbours from behind the balk have unusual customs. One of them is for example pomlazka, a symbolic act of beating women with willow twines which should give them energy and beauty.

Italy:

The Italians spend Easter with swing - meetings in a large group of family and friends, stacked tables and an unusual decoration with baking in the shape of a pigeon which is a symbol of good news.

Germany:

A characteristic thing for Easter in Germany is when children are looking for the Easter bunny, which means hidden sweets in the garden. An unknown tradition there for example is our version of the "wet Monday". They really have something to regret.

Sweden:

A custom cultivated for centuries in Sweden for Easter are visits from little witches called Paskkaerringar. They knock on doors, and when they say: "Glad Pask" (Happy Easter) then it's time to throw them some sweets into their basket.

U.S.A. :

On Easter Sunday they organize parades in many cities. The most famous of them is Easter Parade in New York. On that day You can see American woman dressed in old national costumes and the hat is the most important part of the outfit.
Monday's the day on which a traditional Easter party takes place. Children go to the White Barrack (White House) for the Easter Egg Roll -> to roll eggs on the lawn.

  1. When it comes to pomlazka it is bad idea. Our Polish women are so beautiful that they don't need any symbolic acts ;)
Bunnys from Germany could be great idea for children. In my opinion Italian and Sweden customs are less interesting than American.

When it comes to our Polish customs I love them all, especially Wet Monday :)

  2. Wet Monday is greater than any German, US or Sveden tradition. It's the best! I hope that in this year would be warmer than in 2008 when it snow around my neighbourhood.

On the west (mainly Silesia) of Poland children eat candy from eastern bunny too.

I think that "Wet Monday" absolutely rulez. However only in the well-behaved, limited version...

  5. I also agree that Wet Monday it’s absolutely the best custom. In this day everyone well know one rule: “If you want to be dry, please seat at home”. When I was younger, I and my friends provoke a lot of water street battles ;)

  6. I think Wet Monday is the worst day of Esters. Sometimes the wether is so horrible for example year ago it was snowing all Esters? and even so stupid "gangs" of children or even brainless as we cold them "dresy" run across the street with the buckets full of water. Truly great example of luck of brain.

  8. I generally agree with all of you. "wet monday" is great but like Marek mentioned not everyone in our country know how to behave when weather isn't good enough.

I also like everything else connected to Easter... all those bunnies, painting eggs... and the free time to spend with friends and familly :)

    Happy Easter everyone! :)

  10. I don't know if we have now any tradition, especially in cities. I like wet monday, because you can get your own back on someone you can't stand with. But this tradition is common on countryside. In Warsaw for instance you can go for a walk and is very probable that you won't meet anyone with bucket of water...

  11. Wet Monday sounds good, nobody wants to be wet, but on that day we can forgive anythink even if we wear our best clothes or prepare greatest hairstyle. I think polish people know how to play and have fun and even if they are abroad, they are trying to keep polish tradition alive.

  14. I agree that wet monday is nice tradition but it should be symbolic. I dont like when it becoming cold water wars between the buildings. German tradition looks pretty nice :)

  15. As all of you I also agree that 'wet monday' is best, but it's great that we have many different and interesting traditions all over the world, for some of us they may sounds funny or even stupid, but don't forget thet it's part of a different cultures.
