Microsoft Education.

Microsoft corporation is a leader in the production of new technology.
Every year it surprises us by introducing something new. How do students or IT specialists acknowledge such innovations? How does Microsoft support people who want to learn their technology? Below I am writing some interesting educational programmes provided especially for students:

- MSDN Academic Alliance – A great student’s programme. Students have access to almost every Microsoft software (operation systems, integrated environments like Visual Studio, databases: SQL Server) in any language or version for free and they may use it also after graduation.

- Community – If you are a .net programmer you may enroll to .net community by portal codeguru.pl. Meetings where one person shows topics related to programmes in a net are organized every week in almost every University. For every meeting, people get points which are exchanged for a prize.
.net community exist in our Institute as well, PJWSTK.NET

- IT Academic Day – It is one day conference organized by students’ community and Microsoft about technology. It is a good occasion to meet with professional IT specialists and find out information about new products..

- E-learning – every technology like SQL Server, .NET, ASP has its own educational portal. For example: http://www.asp.net/ It’s really helpful because there are a lot of tutorial films, articles, practice and examples. You may learn this technology yourself “from zero level to expert level”.

- Training and Microsoft Certificates– It is very important for an IT specialist to attain some Certificates which prove his knowledge. Microsoft Certifications are the best recognized in global IT business. Also in our Institute we have a possibility to enroll to the training, pass the exam and get certificates.

- Imagine cup; is very a popular international technology competition. In 2008, 210,000 competitors representing over 100 countries competed in the nine Imagine Cup category: software design, embedded development, game development, robotic and algorithm, IT challenge, photography, short film, design. In 2010 Imagine Cup will be organized in Poland.

- BizSpark – Its innovative new program is designed to unite Startups and resources to support them into a single community. In practice it means that if you want to create your own IT business, Microsoft allows you to have access to their software for free for a period of up to 3 years. You may use this software for commercial goals without any restriction. After this time you have to pay only 100$. This program is also available in Poland! Isn’t it great?

- Conferences – Microsoft organizes international conferences “Microsoft Tech Submit” for IT specialists, analytics and administrators. After the conference, presentations are stored for free public use on the Internet. (Last conf: http://www.mts2008.pl/) In next weekend will be Code Camp conference:

I will be there :)

- Books – Microsoft has its own publishing house “Microsoft Press”, whose book are also available in Polish language. They have really impressive collection of books.

- Practices – Every summer the best students have an occasion to get practical experience in the Centers of Microsoft in Europe and in the main headquarter in Redmond.

- Learning Snacks – This is a series of short films about Microsoft’s technology. The name “Learning Snacks” is because you can watch it between lunch and dinner ;)

- Worth mentioning are blogs, TV “Channel 9”, forums, special education program for the University, “Student to Business” program, non official page, and more and more! Even educational games like “Are you certificated:” http://www.microsoft.com/click/areyoucertifiable/

What do you think about it? Is it really helpful or is it good only for the very beginners? Why does only Microsoft promotes so much for us to learn? And what about Sun- now Oracle, IBM, Adobe…. They also have very powerful educational programmes ?

You forgot about original MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) which is mainly a place where all the web based tutorials, specifications and articles can be found. I've used it extensively programming Visual Basic and WinAPI in C 9 years ago... Even then it was a great place.
But now I'm a grown-up and I don't use MS products any more nor I develop software based on them. :-P
Sun and Oracle always had powerful education programs - books, tutorials, exams (some of those for free). I have also participated in certification programs of Tibco (SOA-related software for enterprise), CISCO (network academy), Veritas (clustering, now part of Symantec)...
As it is in open source, companies make a lot of many on the training programs (that's usually as much as for selling software).

  2. Not my domain. Only thing that comes to my mind - students gain and MS gains.
Sun, Oracle, IBM, Adobe maybe they're not so insistent like MS.

  3. Mocrosoft isn't doing all this just because he loves us all.

Thanks to all those programs Microsoft can be everywhere. Starting from primary schools where children are getting familiar with computers and ending with training courses with certificates. And if someone wants to learn on his own he can find many answers on mentioned above Microsoft websites.

Thanks to all this everyone knows Microsoft products(maybe not all of them but it is a matter of time :) ). People want to use MS Windows at home and at work...

I'm not saying that Microsoft produts are bad... I'm using them everyday and I am happy. I have tried other operating systems and I can choose wisely what I want but there are many people who know only MS Windows and they are saying that it is the only good solution...

  4. I agree that MS have in all of it great business. All those free licences for MS products, tutorials and communities are there to foster yet another MS generation.

Im not saying that is bed. But it sure doesnt help other software companies to develop.

  5. it's not about education, it's about money. that's just another way to get people used to specific products.

personally i believe schools should never include proprietary products/technologies in study programme. all kinds of courses should be 'generic', teaching studens the basics, theory and standards required to master ANY product/technology and not just a particular one.

  6. Again, money is the reason. Like You said: it is to get You used to use specific products. People want to use ms windows because of other software and compatibility. It has the best support when it comes to drivers. Tool programs, games, other software make you want to use windows. I would change it if I could find a system that runs my favourite programs and games. There's only ms, so I have no other choice. Emulating windows is crap.

  8. I know a lot of people who glorify e-learning. Yeah... it's a quite useful system. It helps save a lot of time what is really important for me. I haven't to go out to write an exam or ask questions and get the answers I need. Of course it could work better like almost everything but just idea is excellent. But the most important thing for me is msdn! It's every M$ program witch are so expensive is free for educational purpose... It's great Idea, because I would probably buy some of them in a future..
I have been on a lot of M$ trainings and conferences and all of them have been prepared perfectly, really.. It's not so bad company.. :)

  9. Don't forget that M$ is a great commercial corporation, it's not a group of people who wants to help each other to educate, explore new technologies and achieve their goals... It's very well-thought-out plan to entreat us to M$ products and technologies, it's the "carrot and stick" approach. If u now use MSDN free licences, u probably buy M$ products in the future (because u're used to work with it, u know it, u think that nothing is better).

But of course on the other hand such initiatives are great opportunities for comparing products and learn new knowledge that can be useful in our future career :)

  10. About certification I have mixed feelings - now everybody are making Microsoft certs and it's to easy to get them. And in our market they are not so desirable as in USA. Other certs like Cisco are more prestige and many company give you a plus when you have them.

  11. A agree that this is just for money. And I agree with s4140. Schools should have various technologies in their programs. I think that there should be more open licence products and schools should focus on them more.
